A blood moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse when the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon. Instead of disappearing completely, the moon takes on a reddish hue. This happens because Earth's atmosphere filters sunlight, scattering blue light and allowing red wavelengths to reach the moon’s surface.
